SOUTHERN CLAIMS COMMISSION RECORDS
Between 1871 and 1873, Southern Loyalists (those who remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War) made more than 22,000 claims for personal property losses during the war. Each claimant sought to prove their loyalty and loss through the testimony of others. Former slaves were often called to testify in behalf of their former master, and the associated paper trail can provide a wealth of information about blacks in the South during the Civil War.
